Bringing the fight against COVID-19 to the neighborhood ROSA SALTER RODRIGUEZ | The Journal Gazette Health officials are taking the fight against COVID-19 to the neighborhoods in upcoming weeks. During a news conference this morning, officials said they are trying to reach the 60% of Allen County residents who are not yet vaccinated. 4 youth centers get food-service upgrades Devan Filchak | The Journal Gazette Four community youth centers have received upgrades to improve food service and life skills learning opportunities. The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation youth centers that received the upgraded equipment are Jennings Center, McMillen Park Community Center, Cooper Center and Weisser Park. The projects include gas-powered range stoves, upright freezers and upright food warming units, which came along with new gas lines, water lines, drain lines and electrical outlets. The kitchen upgrades were funded by a grant of more than $21,000 from Feeding America through Community Harvest Food Bank. Mayor Tom Henry said the projects help with a challenge every community the size of Fort Wayne has to overcome food deserts. The centers improvements will make it easier to continue providing free meals to children, he said at a Weisser Park news conference.

Allen Superior Court Celebrates 50th Drug Court Graduation

2:09 Allen is one of the roughly 55 circuit, superior, county, and city courts in the Hoosier state that have programs for individuals seeking recovery for drug or alcohol addiction. Typically, the drug court program serves as an alternative to jail time. Judge Fran Gull oversees the program, and served as the master of ceremonies Monday. She says it doesn’t take a lot to get people on board. “When they get to this point, they have fully embraced sobriety, they have fully embraced recovery, and they are ready for the next step in their lives,” said Gull. There are a few rules in order to participate: no prior convictions for serious violent felony offenses or forcible felonies; no detainers, warrants, parole or probation violations elsewhere; and no firearms involved in the specific offense.
