When last we checked on the ancient and somewhat uncertain McMillan Dam at Buffalo Springs Lake, it was deemed “scary,” but not an imminent threat to public safety.
That said, authorities from several municipal agencies were working together to secure a grant that would in turn be used to help secure the structure. McMillan Dam, according to our earlier stories, was built in the 1970s. It keeps the Buffalo Springs Lake water level flat with the overflow spilling downstream into the lake at Ransom Canyon.
Since it came online, there’s been little maintenance work done on the structure. Consequently, for more than a decade now, the dam, like many others around the country, has been found itself in the high-risk category per the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
