Volusia County Council votes against allowing dog-friendly beaches

Volusia County beachgoers will still have to leave their dogs at home, after the County Council voted Tuesday not to open up any of the Atlantic Ocean beaches to pets. Councilmembers Billie Wheeler, Ben Johnson, Heather Post, Barbara Girtman and Danny Robins voted in the majority. Chair Jeff Brower was the lone opposition vote, and Councilman Fred Lowry was absent from the vote. Johnson said dogs don t belong everywhere. He mentioned potential problems with dog bites and waste left behind. Not everybody likes dogs. Some are extremely afraid of dogs, he said. At this time, our best course of action is to not take any action.

Many think we should share the beaches with our four-legged friends.  There will always be someone who will not follow the rules. We all know that, but I think the people who want this and that would work together, would come together to make the appropriate allotments to have our dogs on the beach, said a woman during public comment.
