Amid two years of struggles, man builds St Helena house by himself

Construction projects tend to be drawn out and full of unpleasant surprises, but Michael Byrnes’ St. Helena dream house set a new bar. He lost his mother, his construction loan was almost canceled, he caught a nasty case of COVID-19, he suffered two potentially life-threatening falls, construction took more than two years, and he had to do most of the work by himself. Byrnes says if he’d known what an ordeal it was going to be, his reaction would have been, “Yeah right, I’m out of here.” Support local news coverage and the people who report it by subscribing to the Napa Valley Register. Spoken like a true lawyer

Nancy Dervin Here’s an idea for Councilman Dohring and his hotel-pushing comrades: get over your preoccupation and declare Adams Street off the table for hotel development, and then pursue all other options, of which there are many ( Let’s put the puzzle together, May 6). We just voted on the issue 6 months ago and, again, advised the city we do not want a hotel on Adams Street. Future St Helena homeowners seek volunteer help with last phase of construction

Eight local families are building their future homes on McCorkle Avenue, and with COVID-19 vaccines now widely available, they’re asking volunteers for help. The families are providing most of the labor as part of the Brenkle Court self-help affordable housing project organized by the nonprofit Our Town St. Helena. The walls are up, but the families need help with drywall, siding, painting and insulation. They were hoping to be done this spring, but the lack of volunteer labor — coupled with the poor air quality associated with the wildfires — has put them about four months behind schedule.
