let s presume that a republican majority in the house with kevin mccarthy, elected speaker, that does not necessarily the. outcome it is possible that he doesn t actually end up as a speaker, although i would say that is the likeliest outcome. but what is the dynamic look like in this republican house? there is obviously been dysfunctional publican houses in the past. will this one have that level of dysfunction or will it even harder for somebody like mccarthy to call these members? it is a great, question. sam you and i were on together when the mccarthy tapes broke on january 6th and i said look this might hold the speakership in peril. you said no, i think you will get through. and sense that he indeed has consolidated, is i don t know if i would call it the crazy caucus. in my s own congress, the crazy caucus was ten or 15 people. now it is the majority of the caucus. so the dynamic is an interesting one. because rather than kevin
private citizen. there were republicans who admitted to letting trump off the hook without knowing the full picture and basically knew the full picture would get worse. when casting his vote back in january of 2021, republican congress michael mccaul of texas said this quote, i will with a heavy heart impose impeachment at this time. i did not come to this decision lightly, and i truly fear there may be more facts that come to light in the future that will put me on the wrong side of this debate. each 1/6 committee hearing brings more and more facts to light, facts that the republicans knew, we know they knew from the mccarthy tapes that the new york times revealed. and even today, where are they? where are the republicans? the ongoing enabling of donald trump and the danger he poses to our democracy is where we start the hour with some of our most favorite reporters and friends. ashley parker is here, washington post white house bureau chief and an msnbc political analyst, also jo
this committee to be getting this audiotape on the eve of their public hearing. revealing how kevin mccarthy actually felt about conducting this kind of investigation just a few days after the attack on the capitol? it s incredibly important because this first hearing in some ways is really going to dictate whether the american people care about what s going to happen. they are going to be turning into say, does this matter. the mccarthy tapes, which he so eloquently presented could ve been the opening statement because when you have allies of the former president back in the day contemporaneously saying this matters, it is important, then the american people can see that this is not just a retried of old events but this matters. that s what the committee has to do the most. show why this matters, january 6th was not the end of, that was the culmination of a systematic attempt to undermine the election which kevin

most forthcoming witnesses to the 1/6 select committee. what if they play hours an hours of tape that show what mo brooks and kevin mccarthy and all of the other members did. how do you counter program that. that might change their legal options but it is not going to change their political optionsch you make a good point about a number of witnesses. a thousand of witnesses are done. as we learn from the mccarthy tapes, on every phone call where there is members there are also staff. there are witnesses and people listening to every conversation that happened on capitol hill. you can t have a private conversation on capitol hill or between members, it almost isn t done. and those kind of things will come out. and will potentially cause perhaps legal problems if there is laws that were broken for any of members. but i could tell you, there is probably nothing that would help kevin mccarthy s chances of being elected speaker more than
