welcome back to all in, i m chris hayes. in just four days, the new republican authority will be sworn into the house of representatives, that includes george santos. the freshman-elect from new york, the man who flipped the democratic seat in a biden district. and essentially has been fabricating his resume. he s currently under vessel gagen by federal prosecutors for his background and finances. from his past reporters are now scrutinizing everything about santos, understandably. especially his apparent southern while. how he went from earning $55,000 in 2020, to loading his campaign over $700,000 just two years later. and how he spent that campaign money. the new york times reporting today that he spends a unusually high amount on hotels, trips across the country. especially someone is relatively new to politics. $3,000 on hotels, $4,000 on air fare, government lobbyists republican citizen says usually a congressional candidate will try to spend as little as possible o
of this vote. and it appears, though obviously it is not done yet. that kevin mccarthy may in fact have the votes. steve, can you give us a bit of the history lesson here? compare this to any other time in modern history? any other time in modern history there is none, because the last time the speaker s vote went past one ballots was 1823. but, we will come back to this board. but to put you in some s perspective what the history of this is. you re looking at here, this is every speakers race in history gone past one ballot. we ll put this past today when there were only 11 ballots. so this is the 15th ballots. right here in history is where the speakers race ranks. is the 15th longest and you can see, there for longer than this were all pre civil war. this is gonna finish well shy of a record of 133. but if it does indeed finish here. 15 ballots will be the fifth longest in american history. and we haven t seen this go past the first ballot since back in 1923. there wer
maximum of 431 voting members. in a majority with 431, it s not to 17, it s 2:16. and kevin mccarthy got to 16 on the last ballot. that s why, it may be a group thing here, where they all vote present. but from mccarthy standpoint, if they all votes and there s nothing to suspect that he won t. then gaetz and rosendale could vote for anybody in the world at this point, but 2:16 will be enough to make kevin mccarthy the speaker of the house. right now it appears that kevin mccarthy just needs them to hold. let s just reset where we are. we are now going through the 15th consecutive vote for the speaker of the house. earlier tonight, it was believed that kevin mccarthy had it at that final, final moments. matt gates was the hold out. and it continues to hold out. we thought they were going to adjourn. it did not happen. and here we are in the middle
out. that s the other part, for mccarthy standpoint is, you re about to take the gavel, it s a big, this is the republican party, we ve got the majority now. it does seem that this is not gonna go anywhere. no, of course, not george santos must be quite a narcissist for him to believe that he can tell these almost comical stories about his own history, and then no one s gonna find out, no one s gonna be able to discover, this because i m so smart, and i ve really been able to cheat the system, no one s gonna notice that i ve made all this up, it is almost comical to that level, even just the campaign spending, and in of itself freezes all types of questions. no one has actually earned and work hard for the type of money that he put into his campaign, spends money like that. a small business person running for office, putting their own money in the campaign, they are very, very careful with the money that they spent. because that s all they got to be suspenseful, corporate people usin
