The mayor and the City Council all state that they are backers of solar renewable energy for Framingham however we have yet to place our first order for a solar energy project for any municipal sites. Most of the surrounding towns have multiple solar energy projects that have been in operation now for up to 10 years. A large majority of these installations were purchased under power purchase agreements (PPA) similar to the proposal now pending before the City Council.
The Solect Energy proposal recently presented to the Council for the McAuliffe Library is also an attractive PPA. It reportedly will save Framingham $100,00 over the 20-year life of the project. The fixed electricity cost of 11 cents per kWh is approximately one half the cost of electricity for a commercial installation at this time.
