Bogus school shutdown: SAPS crack the whip on unregistered classrooms
The Department of Education and SAPS closed down the Everest College school in Mpumalanga on Tuesday as it had not properly registered.
The Department of Education in Mpumalanga has shut down an independent school in the province that failed to register correctly, with the students currently enrolled there told to apply for admission into a different place of learning.
South African Police service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said in a statement on Wednesday 12 May that Everest College in Mbombela was was established, maintained and operated without being registered by the Department of Education, meaning that it is in defiance of the South African Schools’ Act.

The independent school offered classes between Grade RRR and Grade 7.
The department has urged parents to start applying at nearby schools.

Everest College of Excellence in the Mbombela Circuit, Ehlanzeni District, was shut down by the department on Wednesday for operating without being registered. The operation of illegal schools is very disruptive as it affects not only the children and their parents, but ultimately affects the smooth running of the teaching and learning programme within circuits and districts. It is on that note that we advise parents to check the legality of any institution before they enlist or register their children, said Education MEC Bonakele Majuba.
