Built around 1895, Springdale remains Holyoke’s largest park, with several baseball fields, two spray pads, and a vast expanse of green space. Parks Department Director Terry Sheppard said Springdale is showing wear and tear, especially around the faded, outdated playground area. The master plan project began two years ago. Sheppard said the initial plan was to bolster safety and limit vehicle access to the park. With limited parking spaces, some visitors drive their cars over the curb on Main Street and park on the grass. “It hasn’t been safe on busy weekend days,” she said. “No one is here to say, ‘get off the field.’”

(The Republican file photo)Freelance Facebook Share HOLYOKE The City Council’s Finance Committee on Monday recommended a new lease between the Valley Blue Sox Foundation Inc. and the Parks and Recreation Department. The Valley Blue Sox, part of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, play their home games at MacKenzie Stadium. The team won the league championship in 2017 and 2018. Its 2020 season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, but it plans to resume games this summer.

Holyoke schools set graduation dates Updated 1:36 PM; HOLYOKE – The city’s public school system has set dates for high school graduations and senior year events. Acting Superintendent Anthony Soto updated the School Committee Monday on graduation and senior events for May and June. A majority of staff and students favored separate graduations for the Holyoke High School North and Dean Campuses. Both schools formed graduation task forces, which comprise students, teachers, parents, school district and health officials. The North Campus graduation occurs Sunday, June 6 at 1 p.m., with Class Day scheduled for June 4. Cap and Gown Day is May 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
