Contentious Riverside Park cat colony discussion dominates city council meeting

[Photo by Derrick Stuckly] The topic of feral cats was again brought before the Brownwood City Council during Tuesday’s meeting as Tami Rodgers with TNR Brownwood presented a petition regarding the cat colony in Riverside Park. A more than two-hour discussion that drifted back and forth from the Riverside Park situation to the entire city itself occurred and featured multiple contentious moments. Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes began the discussion by stating, “It came to our attention several months ago that we had people building structures inside our city parks for the cats, along with feeding the cats on a regular basis. We’re getting tons of complaints about the number of cats in our parks about feces in the playground equipment and other issues. [Photo by Derrick Stuckly] Melody Nowowiejski was sworn in as the new Ward 3 council member during Tuesday’s meeting of the Brownwood City Council. Nowowiejski won a specially called election on May 1 over Linda Heitman to fill the unexpired term of Larry Mathis, who is moving to Georgetown. Once Nowowiejski received the oath of office, she took Mathis’ place on the dais. Tuesday was also the final city council meeting for outgoing Brownwood Assistant Manager Tim Airheart, who is retiring after spending 30 years as an employee of the City.

HPU s Social Work Program Visits Brownwood City Officials

HPU Professor Rachel Derrington arranged the class visit in order to allow the students to learn more about local government as part of the program’s focus on training students to engage with their community to better serve at-risk, disadvantaged, and diverse populations in rural Texas.
