Testimony split on House Bills 2014, 2015, to raise taxes on marijuana

ONTARIO Two bills introduced in the Oregon Legislature to allow cities to boost revenue from the tax on retail marijuana sales were heard in committee on Thursday, and testimony pitted city officials for the bills against marijuana industry representatives opposed to them. Lead-off witnesses before the House Revenue Committee were from Ontario as the bills were introduced by Rep. Mark Owens, R-Crane, at the request of city officials. House Bill 2014 would distribute marijuana funds revenue by population and location of the city, based on its share of retail sales of marijuana items in Oregon. Currently distribution is based on population and the number of licensed marijuana businesses.

Shelter concerns addressed at council meeting

ONTARIO The transitional homeless shelter in Ontario, located at 123 N.W. Third Ave., the collaborative partnership between local nonprofit housing assistance agency Community in Action, local faith-based organization, Origins Faith Community and the City of Ontario, has raised concern from a citizen. The concerned citizen, Ingeborg Dickerson, owner of the Huey apartments at NW Third Ave., submitted a letter addressed to Chief of Police Steven Romero, Mayor Riley Hill, and all members of the Ontario City Council, saying that after speaking to the “the lady who owns the Townhouse apartments,” the site where the shelters are and was “assured” that there would “a 6-foot fence to enclose the entire project.”

Charter review ad hoc committee to form

ONTARIO Ontario City Council, at its second regular session meeting, Mayor Riley Hill appointed the three councilors who will sit on the charter review ad hoc committee with four members of the public: Councilors Ken Hart, John Kirby and Sam Baker. Councilor Ken Hart moved for Ontario City Council to “establish a charter review committee and advertise for the public members as recommended by staff” according to an agenda report outlining the proposed motion dated Feb. 8. In the report, it was noted that the Ontario City Charter “has not been modified since 1985” which is a total of 36 years. The purpose of forming an ad hoc committee relating to updating the city’s charter, according to the agenda report, “to study possible changes in the city charter including a possible change related to the imposition of a local sales tax as requested by a written citizen petition presented to the council on January 19, 2021 by Jackson Q. Fox.”
