The Lewiston City Council discussed the possibility of extending the city’s face covering mandate which is set to expire at the end of the day Monday.
At a meeting Thursday night, two councilors expressed support for extending the citywide mask mandate after hearing public health data that correlated a decline in COVID-19 cases with the enactment of the mandate in November.
Councilors Bob Blakey and John Bradbury both spoke in support of extending the face covering mandate, with Bradbury suggesting removal the medical exemption from the emergency order because it allows less restrictive face shields as an alternative to masks. The order doesn’t require people to prove they have a medical exemption, and Bradbury believes people are using that as an excuse to not wear a mask.
