Bear fountain in Geneseo NY hit by cars 3 times since March
And again and again.
Geneseo’s iconic “bear fountain” on Main Street between Center and Bank streets was hit by cars on March 31, April 26 and May 8, the Livingston County News reported.
No one was hurt, and the fountain sustained no major damage, just scrapes to its pink-tinged granite basin. But the rash of episodes represents the continuation of an odd phenomenon: motorists running head-on into a large, highly visible landmark.
Especially odd because many of the crashes have occurred during daylight hours, noted Geneseo Fire Chief Andrew Chanler.
“It boggles the mind,” said Amie Alden, who was born and raised in Geneseo, now makes her home in Groveland and serves as Livingston County historian.
Daniel Carswell now serving as Chief of the St Augustine Beach Police Department
Melinda Conlon reported to Historic City News the official appointment of St Augustine Beach Police Chief Daniel Carswell from the interim position he has filled since November 9, 2020. The decision of the City Commission was unanimous.
Chief Carswell began his career with the St. Augustine Beach Police Department fifteen years ago in 2006. Carswell served as a patrolman for six years and was promoted to Patrol Sergeant where he supervised the daily activities of a patrol shift as well as the Field Training Program for the agency. He also served as Patrol Operations Lieutenant where he supervised all patrol activities, internal affairs, special events and agency training. Carswell was promoted to the rank of Commander by then Chief of Police, Hardwick in 2020. On November 9, 2020, Carswell was selected by the Commission to serve as Interim Chief of Police.
SMALL businesswoman Nyree Johnson is the latest person to announce their candidacy in the increasingly crowded race to be Rockhampton’s next mayor.
Mrs Johnson will have her work cut out winning the election against Councillors Tony Williams and Donna Kirkland, as well as Chris “Pineapple” Hooper and Chris Davies.
Mrs Johnson has a diverse resume featuring occuptions including small business owner, writer, ambassador, Scout leader and workforce analyst in the energy sector.
She grew up in Rockhampton and spent time in Longreach and Brisbane as a teenager and young adult before moving home to Rockhampton in 2010 - spending a total of 25 years in the city.
