Indianola streetscape project OK d, expected to cost almost $10 million

After nearly an hour and a half of public comment Monday evening, the Indianola City Council unanimously voted to move forward with its streetscape project. The city will end up paying $9,645,509.80 to Absolute Concrete Inc. for the downtown Square s redesign. The project was originally expected to cost $6,877,765.10. Despite the higher price, councilmember Greg Marchant backed the project, saying the council can t keep kicking these projects down the road. Would I have liked to have a lower bid? Sure, he said. But I m glad we got a bid. The city is expected to use funds from the local option sales and services tax, along with a $4.7 million bond through tax increment financing to fund the project. Taxes are not expected to be raised to fund the project.

Special Election results: Ankeny, Johnston approve school funding measures

In Central Iowa, voters overwhelmingly approved school funding measures for Ankeny and Johnston Schools. Ankeny says the the money could go toward property tax relief, IT infrastructure, school safety and security, and remodels, among other costs. Johnston has been using the funds for a new high school, building renovations, HVAC updates and new baseball and softball fields. Mitchellville voters did not support the plans for a new $1.5 million dollar fire station using general obligation funds. In the race for Mayor of Indianola, the unofficial results have current Mayor Pam Pepper winning by just eight votes. She stepped into the role after Mayor Kelly Shaw resigned last fall. She ll be up for election again in November.
