SANTA ANA, Calif. (CN) Democrats picked up a second seat on the five-member Orange County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday when Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley won a special election to replace a Republican supervisor elected to Congress last year.
Costa Mesa Becomes Latest City to Explore Pay Raise for Grocery Workers
Costa Mesa is considering boosting the hourly wages of grocery workers during the pandemic, joining a shopping list of other Orange County cities exploring the initiative.
Its city council will discuss an urgency ordinance March 2 to pay certain grocery workers an extra $4 per hour in “hazard pay.”
“Grocery workers generally receive lower wages than other professions deemed essential during the pandemic such as doctors,” says a city report. “There is a need to incentivize experienced grocery workers to remain employed in order to provide continuity of services to the public during the disaster.”
The Police Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) announced its endorsement for Mayor Katrina Foley’s campaign for Orange County Supervisor. Foley is seeking election to Orange County’s 2nd Supervisorial District, in an election that will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2021.
Edgar Hampton, President of the Orange County Chapter of PORAC, released the following statement announcing the endorsement:
“Mayor Katrina Foley knows that public safety is the first job of our leaders, and her track record proves that she lives up to that responsibility. We trust Mayor Foley to work closely with law enforcement to keep neighborhoods safe and protect Orange County’s unique quality of life. Mayor Foley is the right choice for Orange County Supervisor, and we are proud to support her campaign.”
