JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Councilman Reggie Gaffney announced his candidacy for Florida State Senate District 6 Thursday evening.
Currently, the Jacksonville native is a two-term council member, local business owner, and founder and president of a non-profit.
Prior to his election to public office, Gaffney served as Chairman of the Board of Jacksonville Port Authority.
He was appointed by Mayor John Peyton as a member of the Mayor s Transition Subcommittee. In 2015, Gaffney was elected to serve District 7 as City Councilman.
COMMENTARY | In 2015 hardly ancient history City Hall adopted a sweeping vision for redeveloping downtown Jacksonville that today reads like a far-fetched alternate reality: Lot J was eyed as a potential future home to a Skyway station. Metropolitan Park was thought to be in a perfect location and was slated to be transformed into the city s iconic waterfront park. Downtown streets would be converted to two lanes. The Landing was considered the crossroads where everything comes together.
The Shipyards, not Metropolitan Park or Lot J, was viewed as an ideal location for a new and major development given its location between a convention hotel and the sports complex.
