Veteran Republican alderman James M. Bassage, Sr., announced a bid for a sixth term on the Hornell Common Council.
Bassage represents Hornell’s 8th Ward. He secured the Republican and Conservative party lines for the Nov. 2 General Election.
No Democratic Party or independent party candidate petitions have been filed for the race.
Currently, Bassage is the chairman of the Common Council s Parks and Recreation Committee and Policy Committee. He also serves on the Planning & Development and Audit committees.
Bassage, 70, calls his 10-year tenure on the city council “rewarding.”
“I have developed a good rapport with the mayor, other city council members and department heads at City Hall and together we have been successful in improving the quality of life in the 8th Ward and the City of Hornell,” he added.

Luxury loft living in downtown Hornell: Rockland Silk Mill ready for tenants
The Lofts at Rockland Silk Mill will open for tenants later this month, bringing the building back to life for the first time in two decades

HORNELL The Rockland Silk Mill once churned out luxury goods by the train-full, helping Hornell become known as the “City of Silk” in the early 20th century.
Today, nearly 100 years after the final silk manufacturing company departed the building at 18 N. Main St. in 1923, the Rockland Silk Mill has been repurposed for a different kind of luxury luxury loft living in downtown Hornell.
People will soon begin to see the City of Corning in a different light, literally.
The city and New York State Electric and Gas have joined forces to transition the near 1,700 city streetlights to LED technology, not only to save money, but also because of the increased safety that residents feel with more visible lights in their neighborhood.
Corning City Manager Mark Ryckman said the Light Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures benefits will include energy preservation, more illumination and less frequent maintenance.
“We anticipate work to install the new lighting will commence later this summer,” Ryckman said. “We have experienced regular streetlight outages as the current lights and fixtures age. This program will substantially increase reliability.”
