South Jacksonville is in the early stages of considering creating an ordinance that would require landlords to register with the village and to register their rental property or properties.
The village board plans to meet with members of Jacksonville’s landlord association to get input before any vote is taken, Mayor Harry Jennings said.
The registration would identify which properties in the village are the rental properties, he said.
Support for the idea stems from a desire to protect tenants, make sure properties are up to code and know who to contact if there is a problem with a property, he said.
