Green Bay’s city attorney conducted a thorough investigation of the city’s 2020 elections and released her conclusions this week in a 19-page memo that stands in stark contrast to Republican legislators’ charges. “Unfortunately, the election has been the center of extensive misinformation and unfounded allegations,” Green Bay City Attorney Vanessa R. Chavez wrote. “The purpose of this memorandum is to provide an overview of the various actions and activities of the City of Green Bay with respect to the 2020 Election season, as well as address the specific allegations which have been made casting doubt on the integrity of the election.”

City Attorney Vanessa Chavez’s newly released report was intended to absolve Mayor Eric Genrich and his staff of any blame, but it made several key admissions that underscore just how corrupt the city’s mishandling really was. “No allegations of fraud have been made with respect to the City’s conduct of the November 3, 2020 election,” Chavez concluded, “and no issues affecting the integrity of the election have been found.” Here’s a big issue, though: Wisconsin Statute § 7.15(1) requires that “each municipal clerk has charge and supervision of elections and registration in the municipality,” and Chavez’s own report concedes that this wasn’t the case in Green Bay last November.

The documents were released as part of an open records request. At issue is a third party group, the Center for Tech and Civic Life, and how much influence the group and its staff had over the election. Allegations published this week in the conservative publication Wisconsin Spotlight said that group, financed in large part by Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, held undue influence over the operation of the election in Wisconsin.
