The yellow police tape has been removed. The front lawn is empty. And the windows are shuttered; there s no sign anyone is home.
Along this stretch of River Street in Oneonta, not far from the eateries, bars, art galleries and boutiques that help shape the business center of this upstate New York college town, it s a quiet spring afternoon.
On the weathered, sagging slate-colored steps leading up to a century old multi-family house, a small bouquet of pink flowers in purple and green plastic wrap is the only sign of the violence that unfolded here 24 hours earlier.
It began with a domestic dispute, police say. Tyler R. Green, 23, allegedly brandished a knife and attacked a woman at her 48 River St. home. After officers arrived, Green was fatally shot by Oneonta Police Sgt. Ralph Pajerski, who officials say acted to save the life of the child by firing two gunshots at the suspect.

An upstate New York police officer investigating a domestic incident shot and killed a man who was armed with a knife, state police said.
The Oneonta Police Department responded to a report of a domestic incident just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, state police said in a news release.

Police say Green was involved in a domestic dispute Tuesday afternoon, and was wielding a knife on River Street before he was shot by Sgt. Ralph Pajerski.

Kevin Marcewiz, who witnessed the incident, told NEWSChannel 2 Green came outside with a toddler around 1 p.m., after allegedly stabbing the woman he lived with in the leg.
When police arrived to the scene, he allegedly dropped the child, and threatened officers with the knife. That s when Pajerski fired two shots, striking Green in the midsection.

On Thursday night, the Oneonta Common Council held a public hearing to discuss the adoption of the Community Advisory Board’s “City of Oneonta Police Department Reform and Reinvention Collaborative” plan.

Oneonta, N.Y. - After hearing from a handful of Oneonta residents, the Common Council unanimously passed the proposed adoption of the plan.
Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig said that this process has been community driven.
When the Advisory Board was first created in the fall of 2020, it split up into sub-committees to focus on specific issues. In this public hearing, some members of the community expressed that the report doesn t accurately reflect the desires of the committees.
