Southland District Council announced in October that it intended to redirect the $200,000 operational funding it paid to Destination Fiordland through Great South, once the former’s current funding contract expired on June 30, 2021. Davis said the agreement had been linked to the council’s three-year plan as members were initially hesitant to transfer responsibility to Great South when the contract was inked. The development agency was then still in its infancy stage and no-one yet knew what it would do, he said. In light of the council s announcement, and after consultations with Great South, Destination Fiordland’s roughly 290 members have voted in favour of winding down the society so operations could be handed over to Great South.
