The North Carolina Office of the State Auditor last week issued an investigative report faulting the town of Ocean Isle Beach and Mayor Debbie Smith for improperly conducting the sale of property to Smith’s real estate company. The report, issued last Thursday, Jan. 27, comes after the state auditor’s office received tips that Smith purchased property before the sale was made public. The department said in the January 2022 investigative report that the department received “five allegations through its Hotline” about Ocean Isle Beach.
