An upmarket neighbourhood in Medellin, Colombia briefly resembled the award-winning Spanish crime series Money Heist on Thursday when 20 masked robbers engaged in a shoot-out with police, before 11 were arrested. Footage of the incident posted on social media showed robbers fleeing on motorbikes after police thwarted their attempt to plunder a gold warehouse.

Medellin‘s gangs may have more members than the country’s last-standing guerrilla group, the ELN, in all of Colombia, according to authorities.
According to the city’s deputy Security Secretary, Leonardo Buitrago, at least 3,000 of the more than 3.5 million inhabitants of Medellin’s metropolitan area are believed to be actively involved in at least 93 gangs.
This would mean that Medellin’s mafia would have as many people in arms as the ELN, which was estimated to have the same number of member according to the United States’ 2020 report on foreign terrorist organizations.

Tensions rise in Colombia ahead of national strike

Tensions in Colombia are rising as social organizations insist on organizing anti-government protests on Wednesday amid a coronavirus outbreak that has all but collapsed healthcare.
Labor unions and other social organizations called for the strike day after the government of President Ivan Duque proposed its third tax reform earlier this month.
Some of the organizations additionally claim they would organize street protests “with all biosafety protocols” to demand policies that promote “for life, peace and democracy.”
Strike organizers dismiss health minister
Health Minister Fernando Ruiz on Monday called on the strike organizers to postpone protests and “join this common effort of society to slow down the” spreading of the virus causing COVID-19.
