State, local and Sonnenberg Garden officials break ground

MPNnow CANANDAIGUA   Officials from New York, Canandaigua and the Board of Directors at Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park broke ground Friday for a new entrance and visitor center to the historic venue. Estimated to be completed sometime in 2021, according to Sonnenberg Executive Director David Hutchings, the $6.1 million project will provide a new entrance for visitors, room for on-site archives, permanent offices for Sonnenberg staff, new maintenance facilities and enough parking for 140 cars.  Hutchings added that with this project and the $7.2 million in restoration done over his 15 years as executive director, we re returning the estate to its original position on the Finger Lakes, adding that it was a jewel of the region.

Ground broken for Canandaigua Emergency Squad s new headquarters

“It doesn’t make sense to put money anymore into the building,” O’Donnell said.   The new facility will provide the squad a reliable space to await calls for help and will also include a large training room that will host community safety training courses such as CPR, First-Aid, Stop the Bleed and others.  The 501(c)(3) nonprofit ambulance service receives no tax-based support and relies on donations and service billing. The ambulance service has been saving money for the time when a new home was needed, but is continuing to ask for the public’s support for this as well as to fund staff and equipment.

Marijuana in NY is legal What Canandaigua is doing about it?

View Comments CANANDAIGUA, NY As of now, a majority of members on Canandaigua City Council appear likely to back opting in to the state marijuana law, although there is a split and several want to hear more from the public before any official action is taken.  In the meantime, should the city go that route, the emphasis now will be on determining where and how legal cannabis dispensaries and/or places to consume the products can be located within its borders.  Earlier this year, the recreational use of marijuana was legalized, although businesses will have to seek licenses in order to operate which could be a lengthy process. The earliest that can happen is Jan. 1, 2022, but for now an individual can have and use up to 3 ounces of weed anywhere where it is legal to use tobacco products.
