One Big Question: Candidates outline their top housing crisis fixes

Candidates standing in today’s elections have put forward their ideas for addressing Basingstoke’s housing crisis. Particularly in the wake of the pandemic, Basingstoke risks pricing people out of their hometown, as access to affordable and energy-efficient accommodation remains a top political priority. From combating loss of land supply, to pledging increased affordable housing, and from the brownfield vs farmland debate to private market prices, the main parties have set out their key housing focusses. It comes in the fourth and final week of the Gazette’s One Big Question series, where we have asked the people vying for your votes about just some of the most pressing issues for the borough.

Election 2021: Candidates tussle over future of town centre

Candidates standing in next week’s elections have shared their plans on how they intend to revitalise the town centre. The economic recovery from the pandemic and the impact that it has had on Basingstoke town centre is a key feature of many of the parties’ campaigns. Promises range from creating a rescue plan to rent cuts, and less aggressive parking policies to creating an experience that cannot be replicated online. The last year has been devastating for retail and hospitality, with subsequent lockdowns and restrictions affecting revenue and seeing many businesses disappear. The big names have also been affected, with the likes of Debenhams, Zara and John Lewis all announce closures recently.

Elections 2021: What s in the TUSC manifesto?

The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition have two candidates in this year’s borough council elections. Mayola Demmenie is standing in Norden whilst Ben McDonnell is standing in Brighton Hill. Basingstoke Council is facing a £3.21m black hole in government funding this year and has lost £6.5 million of government funding since 2010. The Tories are planning to make working-class people pay for the crisis by imposing more cuts whilst big companies and the rich have increased their wealth. It’s vital that mass resistance is urgently mobilised to oppose cuts, demanding full government funding to local councils. A clear socialist alternative to the Tories’ Covid-accelerated capitalist crisis is needed, which can force an immediate U-turn on Johnson’s weak and divided government.
