Wellsford ditches Hoteo River for bore water
Watercare has identified a new groundwater source for Wellsford as part of a $1 billion plan to upgrade water and wastewater infrastructure for the northern parts of Auckland over the next 10 years.
Assuming Watercare can secure appropriate consents, the new source, off Wayby Valley Road, will replace the Hoteo River as Wellsford’s primary water source. Watercare spokesperson Maxine Clayton says groundwater has a number of advantages over river water. It is not subject to the same seasonal fluctuations as a river – particularly during a drought – and requires less treatment because it is a protected source.
Watercare forces lease extension
An “outfall pipe” recently completed by Watercare on the Mahurangi Peninsula.
Watercare has forcibly extended the lease on its wastewater project site at Dawson Road until January 2024 by using the Public Works Act after a lease extension was denied by the Rodney Local Board.
Mark Dinniss, of the Snells Beach Ratepayers and Residents Association (SBRRA), told local residents at a meeting earlier this month that he intended to investigate the validity of using the Act in this way.
Previously, the SBRRA successfully lobbied the Local Board not to renew Watercare’s lease, after Dawson Road residents complained about noise, dust pollution and threats to their children’s safety because of the site.

The original roundabout in Northcote was built in 2018 at the centre of a $400,000 project. It was later removed to make way for a water infrastructure upgrade, but is now being replaced.
Tax and ratepayers have forked out $600,000 for a roundabout to be built on Auckland’s North Shore, twice. Council-controlled Auckland Transport first built the roundabout on Ocean View Road in 2018. Construction of the roundabout cost about $400,000, costs which also included traffic management, speed tables and pavement work as part of the Northcote Safe Cycle Route. But that roundabout was recently demolished – to allow the construction of a water main which will serve the Northcote Development, a major Government housing project just over 100 metres away.
