Washington Gov. Inslee Sued Over New Capital Gains Tax
The lawsuit comes as President Joe Biden pushes for big increases in federal capital gains tax rates.
Washington is one of a handful of U.S. states that doesn’t levy a personal or corporate state income tax.
Inslee, a Democrat, called the measure an “economic justice legislative package,” when he signed it into law May 4.
“This is a day where Washington state starts to make progress on making our upside-down tax system fairer and more equitable,” the governor said in a statement. “Today, we are taking steps to address this out-of-date system where working families pay a much higher percentage of their income than those who make a lot more.”

Gov. Inslee signed off on Washington’s new capital gains tax Tuesday afternoon.
State Representative Noel Frame calls the tax “another gigantic step towards rebalancing the tax code.”
Frame and most other Democrats are celebrating the legislature’s passage of the 7% tax on capital gains over $250,000, which will bring in an estimated $415 million in 2023, its first year. That will be used to invest in child care, early learning, and more as a way to balance the state’s tax code.
Washington accused of inflating coronavirus deaths after counting woman who died of fall Christine Frye: 99-year-old mom was incredibly proud of her coronavirus recovery Follow Us
Question of the Day By Valerie Richardson - The Washington Times - Wednesday, January 20, 2021
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has dismissed those accusing the state of overreporting its novel coronavirus deaths, but it would be tough to shrug off the case of Helen Sertz.
Sertz died June 4 after a fall at her home in Federal Way, Washington, yet the state Department of Health listed her as a COVID-19 fatality, even though her death certificate made no mention of the virus.
A new report discovered Washington state’s Department of Health (DOH) is inflating its COVID-19 death totals “by potentially hundreds of deaths,” despite being reprimanded over the summer for similar errors.
Analyzing more than 2000 death certificates from as early as September, investigators at Freedom Foundation found that 170 so-called COVID deaths listed no reference to the virus, while another 171 death certificates simply listed COVID-19 as a “possible contributing factor,” but not a direct cause of death.
These results follow a Freedom Foundation report from May which noted that the state was overreporting COVID-19 cases by up to 13 percent by counting anyone who “tests positive for COVID-19 and subsequently dies” as a coronavirus death.
