“Auckland Transport acknowledging that is really significant.” The flag featured on both K Rd and the steps of Freyberg Place in the CBD is the Progress Pride Flag, which includes black and brown stripes to represent queer communities of colour and pink, white and light blue to acknowledge the transgender community.

The rainbow steps in Freyberg Place are modelled on the Progress Pride Flag. It was incredibly important for Māori and Pasifika communities and the migrant community to see support for that flag, Tweedie said. John Nottage, co-chair of AT’s Rainbow Community, said the crossing could be the first in the country to include the colours of the Progress Pride Flag.

Auckland Pride Festival was one of the few major cultural festivals that made it to the stage in 2020 – and one year on, it s among the first to return to Auckland, bigger than ever and leading the way on Covid-19 preparedness.
While many festivals have downsized as a result of lockdown, Auckland Pride is going to a full month for the first time, and expanding across the city with 203 events celebrating the city s rainbow community.
While Pride festivals worldwide were cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Auckland Pride was one of the last to go ahead before the world locked down.
Now it looks to be one of the first to return in all its glory, with more than 200 events taking place throughout the month of February.
Pride director Max Tweedie, who became involved with the festival after the restructuring of the board in 2018, said he wanted to create a festival where money wasn’t a barrier for anyone in the rainbow community.

…which is fascinating because it was the woke takeover of the Pride Parade Board that banned Police from marching in Uniform that saw a vast collapse of the event from 30 000 to barely 3000.
Conversion therapy is the pseudoscientific practice of trying to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. It’s been criticised internationally as being based on bad science and medicine and has copped criticism for being harmful to the mental health of the people who undergo it. This has led many countries and states to implement bans. With Parliament returning from the summer break this month for its first sitting block of 2020, campaigners are calling on the Government to put the ban at the top of the legislative agenda. February is also Pride Month in New Zealand, when a light is shone on LGBT political issues.
