Veterans Voice: Vietnam vet recalls horror of friendly fire By Mary K. Talbot, Special to The Journal © Submitted photos Bill Babcock as a platoon leader in Vietnam, spring 1970. Thirteen was Bill Babcock’s lucky number back in October 1969.  On his 23rd birthday, Babcock had taken command of his first platoon in Vietnam.  He had been assigned to Bravo Company, 3/8th Infantry, 1st Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division.  He was one of four lieutenants in the company. He would join 2nd Lt. Fred Bullet, 2nd Lt. Dave Mann and 2nd Lt. Virgil Judah. Each man would be responsible for a platoon of about 30 to 35 men. Babcock was nervous, but also excited.
