Joel Osteen’s megachurch got $4.4 million in PPP funding Brian Niemietz
The megachurch headed by televangelist Joel Osteen reportedly received a $4.4 million Paycheck Protection Program loan from the federal government. That level of aid for religious institutions is believed to be unprecedented.
NBC News reports that Osteen’s Texas-based Lakewood Church was given that loan in July after the religious institution suspended in-person services it relies on for donations.
“As far as we are aware, this is the first time that the government has backstopped the payrolls of religious groups on this scale,” spokesperson Maureen O’Leary of the Interfaith Alliance said.
