577 riders from across 26 states lined up for the race Saturday morning. Packing 10,400ft elevation, a mountaintop finish and 60 percent gravel surfaces, the Crusher in the Tushar is rated as one of the hardest gravel rides on the calendar.
“Our 10th running of the Crusher in the Tushar is a year late, but so much greater than I ever could have imagined it when I started back in 2010,” said Burke Swindlehurst, founder and event director of Crusher in the Tushar.
This year’s Tushar was the first since 2019 after the 2020 edition was canceled due to COVID complications. Swindlehurst thanked event owners Life Time, which acquired the race 18 months ago.

Moriah Wilson is one of those names that keeps popping up.
As an avid follower of the Grasshopper Adventure Series, I recognize her name from the podium in the NorCal race series. Last autumn, she quietly took the FKT on the White Rim Trail (although her record fell by six seconds this spring). This spring, she placed second at the snowy Shasta Gravel Hugger and first at the wild and wacky Rock Cobbler. She and her privateering teammate Maude Ferrell have basically dominated every major gravel event in California in the past two years.

Pete Stetina is a gravel racer, and a gravel racer promoter. For his Sept. 11 race, Stetina’s Paydirt, Stetina is offering a cash payout only for the women, and has time bonuses for things like riding a mechanical bull and lassoing a keg with a tire.
“Throughout my career the women raced early and got less exposure than the men, and I’ve thought about that, a lot,” Stetina said. “I can’t fix it alone, but if everyone who thought about equality in cycling did a little bit to try and fix it, things would change for the better. So we’re going to do what we can, and I hope it inspires others to do the same.”
