World War II retired Fort Bragg Command Sgt Maj Rock Merritt dies

Decades after retired Command Sgt. Maj. Kenneth “Rock” Merritt jumped into World War II conflicts and retired as the 18th Airborne Corps  top enlisted senior adviser, Merritt’s presence was still known around Fort Bragg. Merritt frequently attended Fort Bragg ceremonies and events  to include standing on Longstreet to high-five every paratrooper during the 82nd Airborne Division s All American Week Division Run.  Merritt didn’t have to tell people he loved soldiers and his time in the Army.  He showed it. Merritt died Wednesday, officials with the 18th Airborne Corps confirmed.  Last week, Corps officials said Merritt was in the hospital “in rough shape,” but did not specify his medical condition, other than saying the reason was not related to COVID-19.

Viewpoint: Unnecessary distractions cloud Second District congressional race

In the golden era of politics, political campaigns were an opportunity for voters to meet the candidates and hear what they had to say about the major issues of the day. Citizens often voted for the candidate they thought would best improve their lives.   Today’s campaigns are more like guerilla skirmishes where opposition research specialists mine an opponents’ history and relationships for whatever dirt they can find. In this year’s race to replace U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, candidates’ friends are also diverting attention away from the real issues. For example, why would City Councilman Jay Banks waste his time going over to the home of congressional candidate Belden Batiste even if he thought Batiste was “in crisis”? Batiste doesn’t even live in Banks’ district. Batiste criticized state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson earlier this week at the Alliance for Good Government forum. That’s politics.
