HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - The 1993 murder of James Jordan, father of NBA superstar Michael Jordan, shocked the nation and created a media frenzy and countless conspiracy theories. A new IMDb TV doc series, Moment of Truth , tells the never-before-seen story behind the murder of the beloved husband and father, as well as the history of social injustice in Robeson County, North Carolina, where two teenagers, Larry Demery and Daniel Green, were charged and convicted of the crime. Director Matthew Perniciaro and Executive Producer Shelly Leslie join us with the details.
It’s James Jordan’s name and son Michael Jordan’s fame that will bring audiences to imdb.com’s “Moment of Truth,” but the docuseries has little to do with them.
The five-part documentary, which began streaming Friday on the Amazon-owned website best known as a resource for TV and movie credits, is really about justice, incompetence, inconsistencies and allegations of corruption.
The elder Jordan, a murder victim not long after his sonâs third NBA title with the Chicago Bulls in 1993, is soon enough an afterthought.
So, too, is Jordan after a retelling of his well-worn basketball origin story, reminders of how close he and his dad were and a clip of the superstar telling Oprah Winfrey in â93 that he didnât want to know the killersâ rationale.

The five-part series, directed by Matthew Perniciaro and Clay Johnson also promises to present new compelling information with critical court documents and evidence photos from the case, as well as exclusive interviews and never-before-released trial audio. I was living in Raleigh, North Carolina when the crime took place, Perniciaro told Fox News. So it’s something I’ve been aware of for the majority of my life… There were so many unanswered questions about this case, that even at the time, as a young person, I remember elements not fully adding up.
