UW-Madison resurrects optional pass-fail grading policy to help stressed students

KELLY MEYERHOFER UW-Madison students can opt out of receiving letter grades this semester under an optional pass/fail grading policy announced this week. LOGAN WROGE, STATE JOURNAL The news brought relief to many students struggling with stress, burnout and a lack of motivation to learn after more than a year of mostly online classes. But it also brought a bit of confusion as to why UW-Madison offered a similar policy last spring and is bringing it back for this semester but didn’t give students grading flexibility last fall. “It’s a victory for students and long overdue,” student council chairman Matthew Mitnick said of Monday’s announcement about the policy. “I find it amazing that it took an entire task force meeting for weeks on end to get a simple email from the provost when (the policy) was already in place last spring.”

UW implements pass/fail grading policy after semester-long student advocacy · The Badger Herald

The University of Wisconsin announced Monday the implementation of a special pass/fail grading option for spring 2021 following months of advocacy from student organizations on campus. While UW Chancellor Rebecca Blank said the university would not implement another blanket pass/fail policy in January, students will now have the option to replace grades in any eligible class with two alternate options Satisfactory Disruption (SD) and University Disruption-No Credit (UD). If selected, these options will not impact a student’s GPA. The latest pass/fail announcement comes after Associated Students of Madison representatives and other student leaders fought for the policy since last fall. Vice Provost for Teaching & Learning John Zumbrunnen said the policy will be similar to the SD/UD policy for spring 2020.

Madison committee recommends rejecting body cameras for police

Madison committee recommends rejecting body cameras for police Last night, Madison’s Public Safety Review Committee (PSRC) voted against both a body worn camera pilot program and a full, city-wide rollout. In a 4-2 vote, PSRC members recommended that the city council reject the controversial technology. That decision comes just a few weeks after a separate city committee finished a 52-page feasibility report on body cameras, which recommended a “vigorous” pilot program before city-wide implementation. PSRC member Matthew Mitnick, who voted against the body cameras, cited concerns over the program’s anticipated costs and that it didn’t adequately address input from community members.
