Syracuse’s pitch to land four-star guard Justin Taylor went like this: arrive in 2022 and replace Buddy Boeheim, who is expected to depart for the NBA Draft next spring, as the Orange’s two guard. You could probably stop there, but the selling points extended further: work hard and possibly earn a starting spot. Play 30-plus minutes per game. Star for a rabid fan base that packs its home court with 25,000-plus fans per game. Last summer, the Orange offered Taylor, an elite jump shooter in the 2022 class. They have pursued him ever since. Assistant coach Gerry McNamara led the way by developing a bond with Taylor and selling him on the idea of the player he could one day be.

Detroit Pistons forward Jerami Grant, who donned Syracuse orange between 2012 and 2014, is making a case not only for the NBA’s Most Improved Player of the Year Award but also for the 2021 All-Star Game.
He chose to sign with the Pistons in free agency after one season with the Denver Nuggets to have a bigger role and to make a statement of self-worth and Black empowerment. Former Syracuse assistant coach Troy Weaver, now the Pistons general manager, inked Grant to a 3-year, $60 million deal he’s thus far living up to.
