For example, how can governments ensure that grain producers don’t face financial penalties when bad harvest weather suddenly forces them to use more propane and natural gas for grain-drying because it’s the only practical way to save their crop? And under the Canada Transportation Act, how can we ensure that carbon-pricing incentives on locomotive fuels are borne by the railways, as intended, and not downloaded to farmers?

Conversations around climate change and the fossil fuel industry in Saskatchewan are complex and emotionally charged, as evidenced recently by the reactions to a Regina city councillor’s motion to restrict advertising for fossil fuel companies. As I both work in the natural gas industry and care deeply about climate change, this debate hits close to home.
To avoid unhealthy polarization, these conversations call for compassion and understanding between governments, industry and citizens. We must, at the same time, be open to constructive critique in order to seek the best path forward.
