Anvil Arts thanks Basingstoke public for petition support

THE chief executive of Anvil Arts has thanked the Basingstoke public for supporting the #ReverseTheCut petition - which now has nearly 6,000 signatures. The petition, set up by arts organisation Campaign for the Arts, calls on Basingstoke Council to retract its recently-announced £4,000 funding cut to the trust. It gained more than 5,000 signatures in the first week, and is the platform’s fastest growing appeal to date. Anvil Arts’ CEO, Matthew Cleaver, said: “We’re really pleased that they’ve got behind the issue, and also obviously absolutely amazed by the number of people who have already signed the petition. “The people’s voices should be listened to by the council I think, it’s significant numbers. It adds weight to the idea that the council should reverse the cut.”

Anvil Arts petition gains more signatures than previously successful Campaign for the Arts plea

A PETITION created by Anvil Arts which urges Basingstoke council to reverse its 50 per cent funding cut to the organisation has exceeded the number of signatures gained by the platform’s previously successful campaign. The plea, published via arts organisation Campaign for the Arts, gained more than 5,000 than less than a week and asks the council to reverse the cut of £400,000, instead working with Anvil Arts to secure the future of theatre in the town. This is the second petition to be published on the website, which describes itself as a collective of tens and thousands of people with a shared aim of helping the arts sector to recover by securing adequate funding.

Long-standing theatre volunteer hopes council cuts to Anvil will save Haymarket

A LONG-SERVING Basingstoke theatre volunteer has said the council’s decision to cut funding for the Anvil Arts could be an opportunity to breathe new life into the historic Haymarket theatre. Hannah Williams, who was marketing officer at the Haymarket Theatre for ten years and remains a volunteer for the Market Chambers Performers Together organisation, told The Gazette she would like to see the £400,000 cut from Anvil Arts used to reinstate the autonomy of the Wote Street venue. Talking about the combining of the venues under the one umbrella in 2007, she said: “The council had this idea in which they decided to give a pot of money to Anvil Arts. It was a good idea to them at the time, but I had misgivings at the start.
