A state Senate committee considered several bills Wednesday that would put new limits on absentee voting in Wisconsin. The Republican proposals would place new restrictions on absentee ballot drop-off locations and ballot drop boxes and set new eligibility requirements for indefinitely confined voters. They are part of a larger package of GOP-sponsored election bills that mostly respond to partisan criticism of the 2020 presidential election. Supporters of the measures discussed Wednesday argue they will increase public confidence in elections by clarifying election administration policies and voting procedures statewide.

Green Bay residents file complaint over November election Trump lost

A group of Green Bay citizens filed a complaint against the city for using a private grant to help run elections Thursday as Republican state lawmakers sought to change how such funds are used in the future.  The efforts may go nowhere. The complaint was brought by an attorney who has lost three lawsuits over the issue in recent months and the legislation faces a likely veto from Democratic Gov. Tony Evers if it gets to him.   But the issue is one of several election-related matters that have captured the attention of Republicans after Donald Trump narrowly lost Wisconsin in the November presidential race.

Election committee members schooled during latest non-public hearing

NEOSiAM 2021 via Pexels The Assembly continued its partisan “investigation” into the 2020 presidential elections with a third invite-only hearing before the Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections on Wednesday.  While Democrats and voting access advocacy groups have labeled past hearings a “sham,” the answers from the sole invited guest were in marked contrast to the first two hearings that featured Republicans, many with no expertise, advancing conspiracy theories, anecdotal tales and unsubstantiated accusations of fraud. The guest was nonpartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe, who  remained pleasant over more than two hours of non-stop questioning, despite queries resembling a cross-examination on a witness stand. She noted at the outset that Wisconsin is one week away from its fifth election during a pandemic. But that was not the focus of the committee’s inquiry.
