Henderson County News: Valley Hill buildings on verge of new life

In March, Kirby Johnson acquired the 3.7-acre tract and the two buildings that remained. The price through a court-ordered sale was $168,000. “I’ve been working on getting this property for about 10 years and I’ve finally been able to make it happen,” Johnson said. “We hope to use the gym for an antique tractor and implement museum and maybe make a duplex out of the cafeteria next door.” Johnson, a Mills River produce grower and packer who lives in the Valley Hill community, is connected with IHCC Chapter 43, a Western North Carolina antique tractor collectors club. On Saturday a yard sale was held in the old gym which, after a dozen years, was cleaned up for the event. The gym and cafeteria, both brick structures, are fully functional. After years of neglect, the school was bought by Pathway Christian Academy and used as a school again. But hard times fell on the private school business during the recession and the elements took a toll on the oldest of the three schoo

Henderson County Business: Ask Matt where s the beef (alo)?

The Pope Family Farm, a six-generation operation in Horse Shoe, is going retail. Steelie Runion and her husband, Sam, are now expanding the beefalo business. “We both lost our jobs to Covid and had to figure out something else to do,” Steelie said. “Expanding the beefalo market looked promising.” Sam Runion said the refitted metal cargo containers will be for retail sales, one for beefalo meat and the other for fresh produce and cut flowers. Pumpkins and Frasier firs will follow. The Pope farm has raised beefalo for years on its 32-acre farm on US 64 West. “Barley’s Tap Room in Asheville has been one of our biggest beefalo customers,” said Steve Pope, a retired professional baseball scout but now involved with the family business.

Henderson County News: Ask Matt about Covid-19 deaths, search for TDA chief

The Henderson County Health Department reported 92 Covid-19 related deaths since the first coronavirus death last March. Of the 1,563 deaths, the coronavirus accounted for 6 percent of the total or one death in seventeen. According to a recent CDC report, in 94 percent of Covid-19 deaths, an underlying medical condition such as diabetes, respiratory failure or cardiac arrest was a contributing factor. While I was pulling death figures, I looked at the average number of deaths in the county for the past three years (1,525 per year) and compared that to the comparable number of births (916). At the rate of 609 more deaths than births each year one can surmise that eventually there would be no one left alive in the county. But we of course have the in-migration factor. So although more residents are passing away than new ones being born, our county still grows at the annual clip of 1.3 percent. That’s more “little pink houses for you and me.”
