Colorado’s 14th Judicial District will soon have a child advocacy center in Steamboat Springs, where children who are victims of abuse or neglect can participate in forensic interviews and get connected to resources.
The Brighter World Child Advocacy Center is a sister organization of Advocates of Routt County and will be housed next door to Advocates, but it is a partnership between Advocates, UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center and Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, an organization that works with abused and neglected children in the court system from Routt, Moffat and Grand counties.
In an effort to help the community feel safer, Routt and Moffat counties are exploring the idea of pretrial services, where those who have not yet been sentenced in court would still face certain accountability measures.
The idea is in its early stages, but District Attorney Matt Karzen said the program could include ankle monitors, drug tests and daily visits with a pretrial services counselor. The program would primarily be used for violent or repeat offenders, he added.
Steamboat Springs Matt Karzan is sworn in Monay as distrcit attorney of the 14th Judicial District by Chief Judge, Michael O Hara. Karzan, who has been a long time prosecutor, takes over for Brett Barkey who announced his resignation as DA in May.

Westminster Police officers arrest a young man who was stopped and found to have an open warrant for shoplifting, Jan. 30, 2020.
When Michelle Reynolds was visiting the Western Slope two years ago to attend a niece’s volleyball game, she could not have imagined she’d spend the next 16 days in jail.
Outside of Grand Junction, she was stopped for speeding, and the officer found an open warrant for her arrest in Boulder, a warrant she didn’t even know about. The officer took her to the Mesa County Jail to await a transfer to Boulder.
“My first four days (in jail) were horrific. I was physically assaulted and emotionally traumatized by another inmate,” Reynolds told state lawmakers Wednesday with her voice breaking.
