Fifty years ago, a shipping error sparked an environmental and economic disaster across the state of Michigan. Instead of a harmless feed additive, Michigan Chemical accidentally sent bags of highly toxic polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) to a Farm Bureau processing facility in Battle Creek.
Thanks to a simple delivery mistake, dairy herds across Michigan were poisoned with PBB in the 1970s. It is estimated that virtually all 9 million people living in Michigan had ingested contaminated meat and milk.
