DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) - The CDC announced masks will no longer be necessary in most places for those who are fully vaccinated. Itâs a big step on the road to recovery that weâre all traveling together.

Athens earned itself yet another spot in the history books Tuesday, becoming home to one of the first health care workers in Alabama to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine against the novel coronavirus.
Athens-Limestone Hospital was one of 15 hospitals in the state designated to receive part of the first batch of vaccines to be distributed to front-line health care workers following federal approval of the vaccine. ALH Interim President Traci Collins said the hospital received 1,950 doses in total, with a little more than half of the hospital s eligible employees saying they wanted to be vaccinated.

As of Tuesday night, some health care workers in the state are now vaccinated. Wednesday, Huntsville Hospital will administer its first doses.
The state chose certain locations in Alabama based off their ability to store Pfizer s vaccine.
At Huntsville Hospital, the freezers are filled up with the initial shipment of doses. Tuesday, Cullman Regional and Athens Limestone began their vaccinations. You bring up the end of the tunnel, and whether or not we are going to see a light at the end of it. You know this to me is the beginning of it, Dr. Matt Hanserd with Athens Limestone Hospital said.
