hair-raising view of the fight to take back the ship. good evening. president obama will head to the gulf tomorrow morning where the news continues to worsen tonight. that huge oil slick tripling in size in just 24 hours, and tonight there are fears the oil escaping that well multiplying so quickly eventually could be carried by the currents around the keys and up the east coast. there is growing criticism over the white house response. we get to it all tonight but we ll begin with ryan owens in dauphin island, alabama. we were talking earlier, ryan, about the oil expected to come ashore within the next 24 hours there. reporter: as soon they worry as early as tomorrow morning. why? it s obvious. this wind has been howling all day bringing all of that oil ever closer to these beaches. mother nature is making this manmade disaster even worse. for a second day high winds and waves up to nine feet are crashing over the booms that snake around miles of the gulf coast. in alaba

than joan davis who lives across the street. it leaves a very empty space in the community and the household. reporter: still, the fire department says the permanent closures are a financial necessity. a message the chief is set to deliver to city council tonight. what we re talking about now is because the budget doesn t look like it s getting better quicker we may have to look at closing a few of these trucks permanently. reporter: the plan consists of three permanent closures matched with two rotating closures. it would save the department roughly $7.5 million but it too comes at a price. while regarded as one of the best response times in the nation the chief admits these closures are counting dollars while costing seconds. we ve seen an increase overall citywide. and we re talking about seconds, but seconds count. we had about a 20-second increase overall in our response time. reporter: in the three areas of permanent closures the response time could go up by
