This week was a disenchanting return to normalcy for Ohio State men's lacrosse, as they were not really competitive all afternoon. It was a gradual building of Penn State's lead, though it wasn't helped by the fact that Ohio State ran out of gas in Q4 again. The Buckeyes were outclassed everywhere. Skylar Wahlund was really bad today. The defense stunk. The offense got absolutely smothered. Faceoff was below 50% again. Etc. Etc.
On a day when the old guard mostly took a back seat, it was a sophomore starter who lit the lamp over and over again. Ed Shean showed his mettle in a real game after dominating in fall, scoring 5 goals and dishing out an assist to pace all Buckeyes in scoring. Shean went 5-7 shooting the ball, which will definitely get it done, and stepped up at a time where Ohio State's offense is still in limbo. Dillon Magee, a vaunted freshman, also managed 2 goals and an assist today, really making a name for himself as a dodger. With Ari Allen MIA, that will be helpful.
I don't know how much of an indicator it is for the rest of the season, but Ohio State started off the year in fine fashion with a comfortable 15-7 victory over the Air Force Academy. There's not much more you could have asked for from the team, as they dominated nearly every phase. If this form continues, look out come late April.
