GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â Fitted in bright orange suits, itâs hard to miss the presence of the Grand Rapids Fire Departmentâs Hazardous Materials Team.
On Tuesday members of the specialized unit assisted the Wyoming Fire Department during an anhydrous ammonia leak.
âOur job is to obviously manage any hazardous incidents in the City of Grand Rapids,â said Lt. Matt Dumond, a Hazardous Materials Team member. âFluid leaks, gas leaks, sometimes solids. Also, we help our neighbors in the metro area if they have hazardous incidents as well.â

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â As rescuers in Florida search through rubble left behind following the demolition of the collapsed Florida condo, the Grand Rapids Fire Department is looking for ways in which one of its specialized units could learn from the disaster.
âAt any instance that call could come in,â said Lt. Matt Dumond. âItâs good that weâre prepared.â
Dumond is one of 36 firefights who are apart of GRFDâS Technical Rescue Team.
Started in the 1990s, itâs a group in which members go through hundreds of hours of training and learn how to respond to structural collapses and trench, confined space, and high-rope rescues.
