The Morgan County Highway Department is pumping the brakes on a portion of roadwork scheduled for this summer, in an effort to include a dangerous stretch in the total project.
Morgan County Highway Department Director Matt Coultas gave an update on proposed roadwork for the year during the Morgan County Commissioners Meeting this morning.
Coultas says the planed project to rehabilitate the north half of Arenzville-Concord Road is being paused as more potential funding has become available allowing for more miles of road to be covered.
“
Our anticipated project scope was to widen shoulders, incorporate rumble strips and repave with HMA or hot mix asphalt through that north section of roadway. Just recently though, the state submitted some requests for application for HSIP funds which are safety monies.

There are rough roads ahead, but highway and street departments are working to make them smooth again.
As winter ice and snow freeze on streets and then melt into cracks in the road surface, street foundations can be compromised and lead to potholes.
In Jacksonville, the work of combating holes in the road’s surface already has begun.
Les Ballenger, superintendent for Jacksonville Municipal Services, said they’ve already been addressing areas of concern after the recent large freeze thawed last week into more mild temperatures.

Residents of eastern Morgan County could soon start seeing heavy machinery and equipment moving into rural areas soon. The Morgan County Commissioners approved a Construction Engineering Services Agreement with locally-based Hutchison Engineering on Monday. The agreement makes Hutchison Engineering the point company for the county when it comes to road usage agreement with the Lincoln Land Wind Project and Apex Clean Energy.
Morgan County Road Engineer Matt Coultas says that Hutchison will become the county’s eyes and ears on the road use agreement during the construction phase of the Lincoln Land Wind Project. Coultas says that Hutchison was chosen for their previous and current work in at least two projects. He says their familiarity with these projects on their scale and in their operation made them an ideal choice.
