Matt Chlastawa: Ready and Grateful For Chance at Fairfield

The moment for Matt Chlastawa came before a 6 a.m. practice.  To allow for social distancing, Fairfield players had to stagger time spent in the locker room during fallball. This time, he was with the early group, getting out to the field at Rafferty Stadium well before many others.  “I got out there super early,” he says. “I was playing wallball, and I walked out to the field. The sun was just rising. It was beautiful. Rafferty Stadium is unbelievable.  “There was nothing else I had to do other than be there and compete and have fun. At that moment, there was nothing I would rather do than be where I was.”

January 2021 Cover: The Players Issue

Typically, I avoid comparisons between sports and warfare. A lacrosse game is not “a war.” Players aren’t “soldiers.” It’s not life or death on Homewood Field it is in the mountains of Northern Afghanistan. Or, more accurately, an arms race ensued, and the college lacrosse landscape was altered by a series of player movements that will [hopefully] never be duplicated again. As intriguing and program-altering as the waterfall of DI-to-DI transfers was, there is another group of players that made the jump to different divisions to make their mark in this tumultuous time.  How will those players fit into their new squads?  Kevin Rogers, M, Lynchburg to High Point Watching Kevin Rogers play lacrosse is sort of like watching film from high-level pick-up games in 2012. Hair-flowing, stick-dangling, and hard-dodging are Rogers’ calling cards from back when.people used calling cards. One of the things that stands out about Rogers is his ability to wrong-foot his defender. He does it with a combination of body control, deception and quickness. Rogers catc
