pelley: good evening. this is one of those days when the economic picture seems so ominous that the stock market rallied on the bad news. investors seemed to think that if things are this precarious, surely the federal reserve will come to the rescue and european leaders will come to their senses. here at home, new claims for unemployment benefits were unexpectedly up today. spain and greece teetered on the edge of bankruptcy. and with that, the dow jumped more than 155 points to close a little over 12,651. it appeared to defy gravity specifically, the gravity of the worsening situation in europe. investors were so doubtful today about spain that its cost of borrowing nearly hit 7%, which the country cannot suffer for long. we have four reports on all of this tonight, and we will start with anthony mason with the looming crisis in europe. reporter: seven is not a lucky number for spain, whose borrowing costs have entered the danger zone. after greece, portugal, and irela

major part of yourself. it really is like losing a family member. reporter: oakland police tell us the sergeant who shot and killed the dog is a veteran with a decade on the force. it just seems obsessive for a family dog. reporter: normal policy is to try pepper spray or a taser with an animal before shooting a gun. in this case the sergeant already had the gun out, thinking there was a burglar in the home. and he had no time to switch out. that just increasing our time, and the officer could have been injured. i m not angry at the police department. putting myself in the police officers shoes, i m sure i would have been just as frightened. reporter: police say they ve received dozens of calls about the labrador shooting. but it s just part of many that they got when they killed a deer. oakland police say it s frustrating that while they received hundreds of calls on animal shootings they receive few calls on human shootings. they rarely here outrage from the pub
