Portugal’s schools will close for two weeks in an attempt to stop the spread of the new coronavirus, Prime Minister António Costa has announced, citing as justification the increase in the number of cases of the most contagious variant of SARS-CoV-2, which rose from around 8% last week to around 20% currently.
County courts in Portugal will also close again except for urgent procedural acts, due to the worsening of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government said on Thursday.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on Thursday attributed the “remarkable increase” in the number of COVID-19 cases in Portugal “to the relaxation” of restrictions during the Christmas period, and “to a lesser extent” to the English variant of SARS-CoV-2.
