It was the middle of a long Montana winter, and I needed an escape. In late 2020 I had thru-hiked the Ouachita Trail, and enjoyed the rolling hills, pristine shelters, and deciduous forests. Compared to the Ouachita, it would be less forgiving, and a lot tougher to escape if weather rolled in.
